Alright folks here we go, I'll start trying to keep picks posted of our ever growing garden. We have started replacing our wooden garden boxes with boxes made out of rock, we just won't have to worry about them going bad like the wood has started doing. Certainly I hope that you all know if you are making garden boxes out of wood you can not use treated wood as that will leach into your food.
We are increasing not only our food garden but our floral gardens as well. We are in the process and it's likely to be a long one. What we call our front yard gets to be my flower garden. While it may not seem like a large area to some for me it's a bit overwhelming. I'm doing my best not to plant any annuals so that one day it will just be the upkeep of all the beauty that will come back each year.
As far as our garden is going we have already picked and frozen two quarts of pea's. I found an Alaskan variety and it said for me to plant it in Feb I thought it was a bit silly, you don't plant that early in Missouri. I followed the directions and wow do we have a bumper crop of peas coming in. I will try to get some garden pics together and get them on here so that you can see where we are now and hopefully feel the same joy we will as we expand our garden. Also I don't see where things are dated as I put them in so I will try hard to remember to do that. The rose pictures below were taken in May 2013.
Bush Beans in 4X4 Raised Beds
This is what my amazing hubby has been working on. There is a two fold benefit to this way of planting a garden. One the soil is so much better, it is a combination of soil, compost, peat moss etc. It makes the "soil" so much easier to work with and it doesn't compact around the root base. Should a weed get in it, it's as simple as taking two fingers to pull it out. No tugging or digging necessary. The second reason is because this raises it above ground level and makes it to where I can work with them despite my limitations. He has gone to extremes to help me be able to still do some of the things I love so much. Because they haven't done well in past years we over planted the first two boxes that you see with bush beans. It was our luck LOL that every single seed came up this year. This is going to be fun to deal with soon.
Bush Green Bean Plants 2
The photo of the green bean bushes above was taken a week or two ago. In that short amount of time you can see how they have jumped up and more than doubled their size. I don't think you can see it easily here but there there are buds all over the plants. That is a good sign meaning we should get lots of beans. we have two boxes like this, so we are very hopeful for this year.
As you can see in these two photos, there is a quick growth rate here, much of that is due to the fact they are not planted in "regular" dirt. This is a mixture of compost and other things as well. The benefits to your garden doing this is amazing.

June 7th Green Beans are here!
If you look very close there are two tiny green beans. This is very exciting for us because the past two years green beans just didn't do well for us. We are wanting to be able to supply each families house with enough to last til next summer. For a change we are hopeful. Check out the next picture.
June 7th Green Bean Blooms
This is just a small section of one row of the green beans. Each and every one of those little blooms you see on there should become a bean. Every row is like that if not more. So if they continue to produce like they are now we should be joyfully over run with green beans.
June 13, 12 Green Beans
We have been so caught up on the beans we were seeing on the tops of the plants that looking underneath didn't occur to us. This is what we found when we did. Lots of them, should be ready for our first picking in about two days.
June 13,12 Green Beans
This is looking really good for being able to have many green beans this summer. Both of the raised beds look like this, just loaded. I believe that we will be able to run three different plantings this season and if they all go like this we will be run over with beans and THRILLED about it.
Below are a group of picutres of our Green Beans in their raised beds and some close up shots of blooms and small beans just starting. These pictures were taken on June 13, 12 also.

Strawberry Patch in a 4X11 Raised Bed
This is our Strawberry Bed. It got in really bad shape these past two years from not being able to work in it. Hubby and Son went out and took down the old frame around it and built this new one. They still have a level to put on it, that is in the works. We got all the weeds removd and put in a fresh mix of dirt, compost and peat moss. I know for a fact those babies are lovin us. They made it bigger for me so as the plants shoot our their runners we can snip them and move them to areas that don't have any plants. By the end of summer this box should be full of plants. They are producing such fat sweet berries, it is a delight to go out and pick one and just eat it.
Strawberry Patch 2
As you can see by this picture the Strawberry plants are really starting to fill in. I'm hoping that by the end of the summer the entire area is covered in plants. If it is then that will make me a happy girl waiting for next summer to get here. Should be a good crop of them. I love going out and eating them fresh right out of the garden, they are so sweet.....................oh, talking about it is making my mouth water.
Strawberry Patch 3
I took this close up picture in case some of you haven't been around a strawberry patch before. The plants send out what is call a runner. You can see those about in the middle of the picture. Then another plant will start off of that runner. This is how they spread so quickly. I forgot to mention with the above picture how they are loving the compost we put in with them. We are seeing huge strawberries now...........they are happy plants. :)
June 13,12 Strawberry Patch
The strawberry patch is really filling in and the plants are getting much bigger this year than they did last year. I believe a change in the amount we are watering them in addition to the compost and additional soil that was added to their bed has made a huge difference. Thankfully we have the everbearing plants for the most part so we are still getting strawberries. Makes for a nice light snack when your out wondering around the yard.
We also learned this year that you just never give up on a strawberry plant. The following pictures are from some that we had to move from the original bed to make room for the changes to it. We put them in a container and within a day they looked like they were all but dead. We continued to water them but things were not looking good. So hoping to help the plants we cut all the dry tops off of them leaving their root bases planted and as you will see in these pictures it was the smartest thing to do, slowly but surely they are getting back to where they need to be.

Cattle Panel Arches for Cucumbers and Loofah Plants
This is pretty amazing I have to tell you. Each one of those arches is a wire cattle panel. Hubby made 2X4 boxes, each box contains cucumber's or Loofah's. As the plants start to grow they will be coaxed into climbing the arches. By the time they are ready to produce it will be as simple as walking under or around the arches to pick them. An amazing idea he had for a wife who has issues bending over. Oh I love this man! :)
Loofah and Green Peppers 2X4 Raised Bed
This is a close up of the boxes that sit by the arches. This is an end box so it has Loofah's on the left next to the wire arch. Since this is an end box we put the pepper plants on the right, they won't vine or need much room so it was a good place for them. Also you will notice in many of my pictures that there are Marigold's planted in with all the veggie plants. Most animals and bugs can't stand the smell of them so it keeps them out of your garden. Works very well on rabbits and deer as well.
Loofah Plants 2
I know that it is pretty hard to see in this picture, however, as the Loofah plants continue to grow they will put out what I call feelers. They are like little arms that stretch out and search for something to grag ahold of. They do this so that once they start producing the vine is anchored and can support all the growth.
June 7th Loofah is Twice the Size Now
I'm dating these pictures from now on, I can't remember exactly how long ago the above picture was taken. I am making a guess of 1 week ago. So here we can see that in one weeks time this Loofah plant has nearly doubled in size. They are hard to see but she has little "arms" that she stretches out to grab hold of the arch. Every so far they wrap these little arms around the wire and really secure themselves. Once they start producing they will need to be anchored as much as possible so the vines are not torn apart by the weight. Other than guiding them to the wire in the beginning there is not further need to help them, they take over and do an amazing job of climbing.
June 13,12 Loofah Plants
The Loofah's continue their work of climbing the arches. To my suprise today I found this beauty. It is the first bloom on the loofah plant. This is a bit exciting as the sooner the gourds start developing the better they need as much of the summer as they can get to grow and then dry out. I'll have to do my research again to see if this is the male or female bloom.
I'm amazed all over the garden this year at how soon the plants are blooming. Most of the plants are half the size they usually are when they start producing and this is definitely the case where the loofah's are concerned.

Green Pepper Plants 2
I certainly need to get better at taking pictures. The green peppers are really taking off. Now when you go out and look at them, there are small white flowers popping up all over. That is where our green peppers will show up. It looks like there should be quite a few of them.
Asparagus aka Aspergrass in a 2X4 Raised Bed
This is the start of a bed for my mother. I don't care to eat the stuff, but she loves it. It is now past time to pick it so it has now grown and is preparing to drop new seeds for next year. It is kind of hard to see but the plant is far taller than I am. We are going to have to make the bed bigger for next year. (excuse the messy hair, it was so windy outside today)
June 7th Asparagus
I had thought these plants were done already, imagine our suprise when we found this little guy yesterday. By this afternoon it will probably be twice that size and be ready to pick. We added more salt to the soil last night and watered their bed well. At this point I won't be suprised if we get more of them. If you notice the two stalks in the back, those are from plants that I let grow big enough to get seeds off of. At that size they nearly resemble bamboo and I'm certain are just as hard as bamboo. I may have to consider cutting those off next year and seeing if they will keep. I could possibly use them for stakes in the garden next year.
June 13, 12 Asperagus-still coming up!
Much to my suprise we are stll getting plants coming up. This little guy is the third one this week I believe.
We have learned a lot about our gardens, watering schedules and growth patterns already this summer. Being home and being able to really watch them daily has been very beneficial and really makes me look forward to next year and even better crops then than what we are having now.

Cucumber Plants in 2X4 Raised Garden Bed
This is a picture of a 2X4 garden box that sits between the arches. Each side is a row of cucumber plants that will grow and vine to their side. They have really jumped up and taken off in the past few days. I certainly hope they do good as this is the year we need to make pickles. It takes quite a few cucumbers to get this job done. Then if there is enough left over we are going to make pickle relish.
Cucumber Plants 2
There is a mighty big difference in just this short amount of time with the cucumber plants as well. Soon we will be able to start the vines going in and out of the arch. Then once it starts producing picking the cucumbers will just be a matter of walking under the arch to get them. This certainly is better than the old method of planting them in hills and having to bend over the entire time you are picking them. If you have never grown cucumbers there can be a lot of them all at one time.
June 7th Cucumber Plants and Blooms
It is very unusual to see blooms on the cucumber plants already. Normally the plants have started making vines and gotten quite a bit bigger than they are now before they start producing. It has to be the combination of the compost mixture we have in the raised beds that are making them go crazy like this. Okay and I'm certain quite a lot of help from God as he loves the beauty of our plants and it's another way that he assures we need not worry about food on the table, He will provide for us.
June 13, 12 Cucumber Plants
The cucumbers are finally getting enough size to them that they are starting to climb the arches now. We do have to assist them some at the beginning but once you get one of their little "arms" to attach to the arch they take off climbing like crazy.
I hope these pictures will inspire some thoughts for your gardens as well. Most of this we do because of my disability, but hey wouldn't anyone rather walk under an arch to pick cucumbers rather than hunt through the traditional hill of cu

Tomato Plants in a Double Decker Raised Garden Bed
This is a double level raised garden bed in front of our house. We were going to put more Strawberry plants here, however, we ran into an issue. We found we were able to buy beautiful Tomato plants from the college here for a wonderful price. So we ended up with 26 plants and had to find space for them. Ah well, guess we can put Strawberrys in there when the Tomato plants are done for the season. It was more important to get them planted and growing since we make our own, catsup, tomato juice, salsa, stewed tomatoes, chili base and spaghetti base. We most normally get enough made to last us and our kids for the year. It's a great savings over buying it through the store and it taste oh so much better and is better for you.
June 7th Our 1st Tomato
You need to look very close right in the middle of the picture and you will see our very first tomato. It's so tiny and cute and we were thrilled to see it there. We were talking just last night and said that we couldn't believe we hadn't seen any yet.
June 7th Our First Clusters of Roma Tomatoes
You can tell by the shape of these that these are Roma tomatoes. I believe all together there were 8 about this same size on the same plant. That is great! These are wonderful for making catsup, salsa and spaghetti sauce as they are a meatier tomato. For those of you who aren't gardners that means they have a lot less seed inside.
Tomato Plant
This is just one of our tomato plants. This one has gotten so large that I now have four bamboo poles in there to support it.
This plant is certainly an over achiever, it wasn't enough that it was growing crazy it decided to branch out a second plant off its base and started that one off in a big way. I'm not sure what else we have to put around that thing if it continues on likes this and certainly we do not have enough of anything for the other 25 plants if they continue to grow in this manner.

June 13, 12 Tomato Plant
This is the same plant as pictured above. This one has just taken off and gone crazy. Though our other tomato plants are close to the same size as this one, he still has the others beat by a bit.
When we went out and did our count this morning trying to see where we are on tomatoes we lost count at one hundred and some of them. Goodness if they all come through like this and keep doing it I won't have to purchase any for canning this year. So Instead of puttingn a picture and label for each plant from this morning I will just put them all in a section below so you can get an idea of what we found this morning.

Cow's Mineral Bucket with Dill
My dad gets these buckets full of minerals for his cattle. He told me two summers ago that he had to find something to do with them, he had a bunch of them. I told him to bring me some I could put them to use. We cleaned them out real well and now I have herbs and flowers in them. What a cost savings as a container this size purchased would cost a lot of money. This bucket is full of Dill, it will be needed for making pickles and relish this summer.
Dill Plants 2
We were so excited when the dill first starting coming up. There was so much of it and we thought we surely had enough in that one bucket alone to be able to make pickles this summer. Well sadly enough I have found out (thanks hubby) that there is a stupid catapilar that loves dill possibly more than we do. In three days time we had pulled 7 of them out of there. The little monsters can eat and destroy plants quickly. We refuse to use any chemicals on our plants as we don't want to take the chance of it being consumed, but something had to be done. After a great deal of searching we finally found a Organic spray that we could use to get rid of them. Boy was I haapy!
June 13, 12 Dill Making a Comeback
After putting the organic spray on our dill plants they are starting to make a comeback. We are finding that even the plants that were chewed on are coming back and starting to thrive.
I'm so relieved because we want to use these dill heads when we make our pickles this year.
I'm putting a few additional pictures under this one so that you can see the acutal dill heads close up.

Raised Garden Beds-June 19, 2012
Red Lillies
I am just amazed at all the Beauty God packs in these Lillies. I could just sit and stare at them for hours on end. They are by far one of my favorites. Now I'm waiting for the pink ones to come out. They are just as beautiful as these deep red ones are.
A Chuck Wagon with Parsley
This is a little wagon mom purchased for me at an Amish auction. It had an array of flowers in it when she got it for me. When it came time to start planting things this year I thought it would be the perfect place for my parsley. So parsley it is. It is doing very well, I lined the top with rocks from our old fish tank and it has worked out well. It keeps the soil from getting disrupted when it rains and I think it looks pretty darn cool.
Blackberry Bushes
We planted five Blackberry Bushes a couple of years ago, sadly enough only two survived. I'm assuming cause of all that was going on we just didn't take care of them as they needed. The plants have already gone on sale this year so we have purchased another three in hopes that next year there will be enough of them to make a few cobblers and put some in the freezer.
June 7th BlackBerry Bush
The Blackberry Bush is doing very well, the berries continue to increase in size and are starting to get the deeper purple color to them now. We had to trim back the other bush that the storm broke. That really upset me because now there won't be enough to put in the freezer for the winter. Then when we were at the pond the other day we noticed something we missed, and how we missed it is over my head. There are tons of wild Blackberry bushes all around the pond. So when they are ready we will go pick those as well. The down side to that is being wild they are just growing all over the place, limbs are intertwined and there are thorns everywhere. We will come out of that picking looking like someone assaulted us with razor blades.
Grape Bush
Our single grape bush is doing very well this year. It appears to me that it must take a couple of years for them to really start producing. Based on this I may find it necessary to purchase some more if they will all produce like this one is.
June 7th Grape Bush
The Grape bush just continues to amaze us, it seems every time we turn around there are even more of them there. The branches have gotten so heavy that we have actually had to go out and add extra support to keep the weight of the grapes from breaking the limbs.
Blackberry Bush
This Blackberry Bush just amazes me. We had a bad storm here a few weeks ago and it split the trunk of this bush. I thought for sure it was going to die and have to be trimmed way back. Amazingly enough it has "repaired" itself, no branches, leaves or berries have died and it continues to grow.
Angel Wing Begonia
My sister moved out of state and couldn't take her house plants with her. This is one that she gave me. We decided it needed a larger pot and hubby made a bamboo support for it. It has gone crazy since we got it to our house. I think because the main part of our house is so open and it just loves the light. I have no idea what the name of this plant is, if any of you should happen to know I would love to find out.
Thanks again here as well for a lady on Pinterest who recognized this house plant and told me what it was. Some of these that my sister gave me or I picked up for next to nothing at Lowes need research done so I assure I am taking proper care of them.

Wild Rose Bush
Always willing to help mom out, our son Shawn went up to the pond with me and dug up this wild rose bush. It's a climber and the roses on it are so beautiful. Poor guy had to dig forever to get it out of the ground, there for a bit I thought it was going to be a no go.
Front Porch
I have been working on trying to make the front porch of our house nicer to look at. I so love plants, so plants are the outside solution to pretty for me. It's sort of hard to see in this picture but there are three different colored Lillies, Mint, Rose Bush, Strawberries-we had to transplant them out of our big patch. Once they are doing good we will put them back in the large bed. Dill, Wild Rose Bush and the little wagon. The little wagon has parsley in it.
Lillies
These are my Lillies. I have had the red ones for a year or so. We were in Lowes the other day and I guess someone forgot to water the Lillies therefore they were damaged. Damaged flowers get sold for less, so at a dollar each we picked up two orange and pink plants. That was four dollars well spent.
Pink Lilly
A close up picture of the Pink Lilly. They really do look white in the picture because they are such a soft pink color.
Red Lilly

Orange Lilly
A close up picture of the Orange Lilly. They are such a bright color. Though I'm not normally fond of orange, in this flower it is beautiful.
June 6th we had to run into Lowes to pick up a few things hubby was needing. You know i waited for him in the garden center. LOL. I did find for sale this time some more of the Lillies, but since they reproduce I figured I had enough and nearly walked right on by them. Then it hit me, there was one there with yellow flowers. Well....I don't have yellow so I HAD to pick up one of those. A dollar well spent LOL.

Cactus Pot
We saw some really pretty pots of various Cactus while out shopping. They are beautiful indeed however, they do think a lot of them and price them accordingly. So we did the next best thing, picked out the ones we like, headed to the Dollar Tree and picked up a one dollar pot, took it all home and made our own.
Exotic Angel Plant-Pilea Aluminum
Oh you could get so sick of reading this, but if you are a house plant lover then Lowes is just the place to go. This little guy got neglected so he was on clearance for 10 cents.
There are some 400 varities of Angel Plants. Having these around your house does a wonderful job of filtering the air inside your home. That would be one reason that we have them, the other is that the beauty of flowers and plants are peaceful to me.

Unknown House Plant
This is another plant that my sister couldn't take with her, so she gave it to me. I am clueless to what this plant is as well. If you know I would so appreciate you commenting on the picture and letting me know. It produces runners that are hard to see in this picture and the runners have small white flowers. It almost reminds me of a Spider plant but I have never seen one of those get white flowers on it.
Fern Mayii and a Bromeliad
Two more Lowes specials. I think these were fifty cents each. Our daughter wanted to try growing the fern, I have never had any luck with them at all, but for that price I was willing to let her try, she may have a very green thumb, there is only one way to find out.
The Bromeliad, I have never had one before. It is so unique that we had to give this one a try as well. I certainly hope it does well. I have a lot of plants to look up after this weekends shopping trip to assure that I'm doing all for them that needs to be done.

Baby Toes Cactus
I just could not leave this plant at the store. Have you ever heard of Baby Toes Cactus? I had not, they are unique looking that I just had to have it.
Unknown Cactus
This is yet another plant my sister gave to me. Should you happen to know what type of cactus this is please drop me a note and let me know. It's not as big of a deal with this one as all cactus are basicly the same, don't over water them and give them lots of light. So we are doing that in hopes of seeing this little guy grow some.
Deffenbacia
This was another ten cent special at Lowes. We have no idea what it is, but it shows lots of promise. It appears to me that it might be something that grows tall, I sure hope so. If you know what this is please drop me a comment.
Many thanks to two women on Pinterest who recognized this little guy and told me what it was. I wasn't really looking to have this plant in the house. I have a fear of a child or pet getting a hold of it, so I will be having hubby make a shelf for me so I can put this in my bedroom. Really going to need to do some research on this one. It is one of a very few house plants that make me a bit more than nervous.
Further research on this plant has calmed my fears, I had it confused with a Dumb Cane, those things are horrible. They will trash your vocal cords and cause your throat to swell rapidly cutting off your air supply. So I was happy to find out I was in error in regards to this plant.

Unknown House Plant
I can never remember what this plant is called either. Again if you happen to know I would appreciate a comment letting me know. I have 9 of these throughout the house and just love them. They are so easy to grow and very forgiving if you forget to water them one week. I usually water all plants that need it on Friday's and now with so many of them I'm sure not to forget these guys. They are very easy to take a start off of also, so if I decide I want more of them I don't have to go out and buy more. My kind of plant for sure.
Exotic Angel Plant-Ivy
We got several pots of these Exotic Angel Ivy's while at Lowes. I believe these may have been about twenty five cents each. We are hoping this one will do well in our bathroom as it requires very low light. Here's crossing our fingers because so far nothing else has done well there.
June 7th Double Knot Rose Bush
I thought I had put a picture of my Rose Bush on here but I hadn't. A week ago it was about half the size of what it is now. I finally figured out how it likes to be watered and it has made a huge differnce in it. I also added some of our compost mixture to it and I believe that has helped alot also.
The Rose Bush has really taken off. Prior to this picture being taken there had been three roses on the bush. Seven days later the bush has really grown a lot and I think there are something like thirteen buds on it now. Below you will see a group of pictures showing what it is looking like today. June 13, 2012.

June 7th Mint Plant
Mother and I had looked all over for a mint plant and she finally found this one. She got it for me and when she brought it to me it was about a tenth the size it is now. They are normally quite easy to grow, however, there for a bit I was really worried. Not only did it seem to not be growing but it appeared it was not going to make it. I added some of our compost mixture to it and started watering it the same as I do for the Rose Bush and in no time at all it has done a complete turn around. I'm tickled silly, there are many dishes and drinks during the summer that fresh mint just makes perfect.
June 13, 12 Mint Plant
This picture does not do justice to show how much this plant has changed in just seven days. Once you figure out how much water and what the right location is for a mint plant they will do exactly what this one is doing....they grow like crazy!
